A
Worthwhile Project.
|
The project to write a book of CHIPPAWA's
History was begun last year. The job to research and document this
history became the personal mission of the author, Mark Nelson.
Through research, though, it had become
evident that much of the history of the Division was lost. There
are times in the past history that the local papers, and the Navy's
own magazine, "The Crowsnest", have reported on events,
such as during WWII and in the years following. But, before the
war, and then again after unification there is not much written
in the local media about the Division.
Of course, there are plenty of members
that clearly recall events after unification. But there are not
many people, who were associated with the Division before the war,
left to tell the tales. Obviously, this project is long overdue,
and is warranted to keep the history alive for future generations.
Special thanks must be given to some
people who have bent over backwards to help me with the stories
and photos in the book:
- Bill Wilson
- Ken McCrea
- Jim Silvester
- Sandy Thomson
- Ralph Kennedy
- Tom Nicholl
- John Dawson
- Mike Shortridge
- The Naval Museum of Manitoba
- Peter Nares
- Karl Reiter
- Ed Sellers
- And many more....
Much of this book should be dedicated
to anyone who ever clipped a newspaper or kept an old photo in a
scrapbook, and then donated it over to our fine Naval Museum in
CHIPPAWA. Much of this type of information was now used by me to
research this book. One such person that did this was Tom "Pop"
MacKay, whose scrapbooks contain much of the historical information
that has been long forgotten up to now.
The book over 400 pages, (Contents)
and is printed in HARD COVER and SOFT COVER versions. It is being
self-published by myself, Mark Nelson. I am counting on pre-orders
of the book to produce the first edition. In fact number of copies
printed, will depend on the number of pre-orders that are received.
I hope you enjoy this book as much
as I had producing it!
